In this work we present an investigation on a conductive thermoplastic nanocomposite used as flexible and stretchable strain gauge to be applied on inflatable structures for both terrestrial and extra-terrestrial applications. In particular we analysed the sensor behaviour by using an one-dimensional expansion system for increasing strain up to 5% and we studied the device changing in temperature. The strain gauge was also tested after several expansion cycles thus analysing the sensor response in time and ageing effects. Finally we tested the sensor on an inflatable naval fender in order to reproduce the sensor behaviour in real conditions. © 2014 IEEE.
