The guidelines provided by the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) ensure data interchange, but the TEIXML verbosity risks to distract annotators with a traditional background in philological studies from their critical activity. We illustrate how a Domain Specific Language (DSL) facilitates both the manual annotation of the critical apparatus and the data interchange.
