Environmental quality evaluation is a remarkable factor of environmental management. The research of methodologies that allow to assign different values of environmental quality to territorial units has to face the lack of parameters that allow to estimate it directly. So it requires to identify tools for the interpretation and the quantitative measurement of situations or events characterized by a large number of unknown quantities or by a certain degree of abstractness. In the present work the study of indexing tools to evaluate environmental quality from biological data has been performed. For this proposal a certain number of floristic and vegetational indices has been considered. The utilization of floristic and vegetational information for the definition of environmental quality is based on the assumption that flora and vegetation variability can give information on environmental variation, included that which are linked to anthropic interferences. Macchia Grande of Ponte Galeria has been chosen as study area. Macchia Grande is located close to the industrial zones of Malagrotta (Rome) and it has been utilized as a "natural laboratory" in other ENEA research activities concerning the evaluation of environmental impact on Ponte Galeria area. The indices have been applied on the basis of the data coming from a phytosociological study of the area. Properties expressed by those indices as single entities and their integrability have been analyzed. Multivariate statistics methodologies have been utilized to obtain a synthetic evaluation of the indices.
