This work deals with the study on the use of a shape memory alloy (SMA) wire for opening a fire vent. We analysed several SMA wire samples; each specimen was took under a series of thermal treatments, analysed by a differential scanning calorimeter in order to assess the phase transformation temperatures, subjected to loading and unloading tests using a mechanical testing machine. The comparison of all the thermo-mechanical results led us to a clear choice of the SMA wire, which was then mounted in a pre-prototype and took under a series of heating/cooling cycles under a constant load. The pre-prototype was then mounted on a fire vent; in order to verify the full vent opening, several tests were carried out without load and under a load representing the situation with snow. The analysis of the forces needed to open the fire vent door without the SMA wire was took as well.
