Italy is one of the European countries with the richest cultural heritage, located throughout its territory - an obvious statement since the days of the Grand Tour in the 18th century. Due to this abundance of the cultural heritage, conservation issues have received a great attention already since early 20th century and the Italian approach to restoration has become an actual school of international fame. The exhibition and its catalogue aim to give evidence of the multidisciplinary approach to cultural heritage promoted by the major Italian research agent, the CNR-DPC, and of its synergic actions through the numerous projects realised all over Italy and the Mediterranean area. The international fame the CNR-DPC has reached based on an integrated humanistic-scientific approach, on sustainability and on new digital technologies finds its best expression in the Grand Tour itinerary proposed through a number of virtual, three-dimensional or multimedia applications combining conservation interests relative to archaeological, urban or mobile heritage to the broad aim to communicate and enhance cultural heritage.
