Abstract

Mini gamma camera IP Guardian. The main clinical applications of th IP Guardian are in radio-guided surgery and scintigraphic diagnosis. All the clinical trials listed below were carried out with Li-Tech devices and performed by the company's staff, in collaboration with university research centres. In 2008, the IP-Guardian was entirely redesigned. The weight of the detection head was reduced by 50% and the hand grip made more ergonomic; the LCD display was reaplaced by a detachable tablet PC and newly patented technological innovations have been incorporated into the system.

Li-tech (Life Imaging Technologies) was created in 2003 around one of the first CNR - National Research Council - spin-off projects funded by the Italian Ministry for Scientific Research. The company's principal aim is the production of high-technology scintigraphic equipment based on novel development techniques patented by both CNR and other institutional and industrial research laboratories. Li-tech is a tangible example of integration between the fields of public sector research and private sector industry in which the combined know-how and synergy are efficiently directed towards the pursuit and achievement of substantial improvements in scintigraphic imaging. The IP Guardian 2 is both, a portable and mobile non invasive scintigraphic device suitable to obtain diagnostic images produced through gamma ray photons. The system includes a hand-held detection head, a 10" touch-screen tablet PC and a mobile carrying cart. The head and the touch-screen PC can be easily removed from the mobile cart, thus becoming an independent system to be carried away in its relevant hard case. Application fields - tumors diagnosis and prevention - location of even small thyroid nodules - location of bone infections - breast and prostate tumors biopsy - radio-guided surgery - colon tumors location - location of parathyroid glands - localisation of sentinel node Special features - high spatial resolution - multi-purpose (nuclear medicine, radio-guided surgery, research) - speed and precision, due to its high efficiency - the only battery-powered portable scintigraphic device - lightweight, practical, easy to handle and small - five international patents The IP Guardian 2 scintigraphic device is designed for the diagnostic examination of small organs. As well as being a valuable instrument for the precise location of several pathologies, it is an efficient support in radio-guided surgery. It is thus the ideal device to replace the traditional gamma camera for lymph node scintigraphy in the operating theatre. The images acquired both before and after surgery can also provide documentary evidence for legal purposes. The device has unusually rapid on-line image acquisition (refresh: 1s) and the high contrast together with its small size are exceptional in the field of scintigraphic imaging. The IP Guardian 2 is thus a lightweight, easy-to-handle, battery-powered hand- held gamma camera that can be placed near the body, thereby substantially improving its spatial resolution. The field of view of approximately 44.1 x 44.1 mm2 and its high spatial resolution enable this device to locate pathologies that cannot be detected using traditional instruments. The system is equipped with radio frequency identification technology (RFID) and a data-base that can store and handle more than 10,000 images, as well as export them to a USB drive in DICOM-compatible format. Images are saved on the monitor by pressing one of the two buttons near the grip. The monitor is actually a detachable tablet PC with Intel processor and built-in camera designed expressly for medical use. Both the 10" LCD touch-screen and the detector head are specially treated so that the outer surfaces can be cleaned with disinfectant.
