This report describes the construction of Bayesian Probability Network Models to assess the chemical environmental pathways from source to environment for Mercury. The model for mercury pollution in the Mediterranean takes into account emission sources (Drivers), mercury transport/deposition (Pressures) and mercury concentration in water, sediment and biota (State). In detail, anthropogenic sources, which include emissions from fossil fuels combustion (coal and oil) in electric power plants and industrial facilities, cement production and incineration of municipal solid wastes, have been considered as Drivers. Among natural sources, biomass burning is the most relevant Driver that can be in somehow reduced. Two categories of anthropogenic Pressures have been considered in the assessment: atmospheric deposition to marine waters and direct discharge of rivers while the State of Mediterranean waters, required the knowledge of Hg concentration and Hg speciation (i.e., dissolved Hg, particulate Hg, methyl Hg, dymethyl Hg) in the water column, sediment and biota, being a critical step in the assessment procedure.
