The main objective of this WP was to develop a database to include past and current information on (a) mercury emissions to the atmosphere from natural and anthropogenic sources, (b) mercury releases to the marine waters due to direct discharges of Hg contaminated waters from industries and rivers, and (c) socio-economic data. This three part database represents the core input data for the integrated modelling system and for the socio-economic analysis. The major focus of this WP was the collection of up to date information on Hg releases to the atmosphere and marine waters from national authorities within the countries in Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. In addition, international organisations involved in collecting Hg emission data were contacted, including the UN Economic Commission for Europe (ECE) Long range Transboundary Transmission of Air Pollutants (LRTAP) Convention, the Oslo and Paris Convention (OSPARCOM), the Helsinki Commission (HELCOM) and the Barcelona Convention (MEDPOL) on the protection of the Mediterranean Sea.
