A new instrumental approach, using a Tri-Carb® 2550TR/AB Liquid Scintillation Analyzer (LSA), for the measurement of toxicity assessment with natural bioluminescent Vibrio Fischeri bacteria has been studied. The standard procedures assume that luminescence of the bacteria, prior to toxic contact, in reactivated solutions and control solutions, remains at a constant value, within a statistical interval time, for the entire measurement period. In this study, luminescence measurements show a decrease in their activity over the time period, even if the bacteria have not been exposed to the toxic agents. To neglect this, produces, an over estimate of the toxic effect. Luminescence measurements with the LSA provide a rapid method to accurately calculate the luminescence values to determine the toxicity levels of various agents.
