The virtual reality system for the Museo Nazionale delle Terme di Diocleziano consists in a virtual room provided with four interactive platforms. Users explore and share the virtual space through avatars: with their actions they create a virtual "show" which can be seen from the audience on a central screen. There are two levels of exploration: 1. A free navigation where users can move into the space following their own personal curiosity, enterprise or perception; 2. A narrative level where audiovisual media/materials, reconstructions and narrative sheets are provided. Whenever a new group of users join the application, the “show” will be different, since it will be developed in an unpredictable way. On the main screen, a sort of general "direction", different visual and informative contents will occur as the user makes changes to the camera shot position. The whole audio system is shared and has 3D stereophonic sounds.

Abstract

The "Virtual Museum of the ancient via Flaminia" and particularly the reconstruction of the Villa of Livia is the first archaeological project developed through several media and technologies at the same time. The reconstruction of an archaeological area which is a cultural heritage site of great value, even if nowadays its fruition is very limited to the public: although open to the pubblic, the villa is located at the border of the traditional touristic routes and totally covered by a permanent roof which prevents the public to have a clear and complete overview of it. The villa is therefore hardly difficult to be understood in its archaeological structure as well as in its historical and cultural value. The virtual reconstruction, instead, aims to effectively communicate complex data throughout a direct and detailed view of the entire area.
