Preface Development of new materials depends directly on the results from basic research in the "synthesis (technology)-structure-property" triad. Multicomponent systems (binary, ternary, etc.) present a particular problem. Having this in mind, the calculation and prognosis of binary phase diagrams have a special importance, because they present the basis for multicomponent systems calculations. In this monograph, which presens part of my PhD thesis, the main types of phase diagrams, their genesis, general principles of calculation and prognosis of phase diagrams have been investigated. Special attention eas paid to the thermodynamical method for the calculation of phase diagrams. This monographs is a part of research activity which was carried out through the projects "Prognosis of Materials Properties" and "Physical Chemistry Processes in the Technology of Advanced Materials", which were financed by the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts and the Science Council of Republic of Serbia.
