This study features the first data on the decapod fauna of Ustica (Sicily, southern Tyrrhenian Sea). Samples were collected in all biotopes around the island in the 0-35 m depth range. 6508 specimens belonging to 53 species and 10 unidentified taxa were found. The most frequently occurring species in the samples were Cestopagurus timidus (38 sites) and Calcinus tubularis (36 sites); the most abundant were C. timidus (53,7%), C. tubularis (28,4%) and Clibanarius erythropus (9%). The largest number of specimens was found in Posidonia oceanica meadows (68%) and in photophilic weed communities (19.1%), that also yielded the largest number of species (26 and 21 respectively). The sampling methods used have shown a wide difference in the number of specimens and species collected. The hand net and the suction sampler yielded 64% and 18.3% individuals respectively; hand collection yielded the largest number of different taxa (44.4%), followed by suction sampler, trammel net and pots (25.4% each). It should be noted though that the number of specimens collected by each sampling method is directly related to the actual abundance of decapods in each biotope rather than to the efficiency of the method. The most interesting records were Calappa tuerkayana, Paractaea monodi, Percnon gibbesi and Pachygrapsus transversus. The latter is recorded for the first time in Italian waters.
Il presente studio riporta i primi dati sulla carcinofauna dell'Isola di Ustica. La raccolta dei campioni è avvenuta in tutti i biotopi presenti attorno all'isola nell'intervallo batimetrico compreso tra 0 e -35 m, utilizzando diverse tecniche. Sono state individuate 53 specie e 10 taxa di ordine superiore non identificati, per un totale di 6508 individui. Le specie più frequenti sono state Cestopagurus timidus (38 siti) e Calcinus tubularis (36 siti); le più abbondanti C. timidus (53,7%), C. tubularis (28,4%) e Clibanarius erythropus (9%). Le biocenosi che hanno fornito il più alto numero di esemplari sono state la prateria a P. oceanica (68%) e le comunità fotofile su roccia (19,1%), che hanno fornito anche il più alto numero di specie (26 e 21, rispettivamente). Tra i metodi impiegati, quello che ha consentito la cattura del maggior numero di individui è stato il retino a mano (64%), seguito dalla sorbona (18,3%), mentre il maggior numero di taxa è stato ottenuto con la raccolta manuale (44,4%), seguito da sorbona, tremaglio e nasse (25,4% ciascuno). Tra le specie più interessanti si segnalano Calappa tuerkayana, Paractaea monodi, Percnon gibbesi e Pachygrapsus transversus. Quest'ultima specie è segnalata per la prima volta in acque italiane.
