The growing demands for the production of biofuels and bio-materials has prompted a worldwide interest in identifying new potential uses of crops and trees as sources of raw feedstock for the chemical industry. The forecast for the biomass utilisation in industriai processes predicts an increasing demand which in a large proportion should be produced by dedicateci systems, such as forest plantations and agroforestry systems, and with the highest possible commitment to economica!, social and environmental sustainability. There is then a large potential for genetic amelioration of trees, with traditional and modern methods, taking into account the specific needs of different and alternative utilisations. The industry should be able to cooperate with the plant biology sector to produce specific and dedicateci demands of research in order to have tailor made lignocellulosic material for the diverse cultivation sites and final destinations.
L'Unione Europea si è impegnata a sostituire, entro il2020, il20% del consumo di combustibili fossili con risorse rinnovabili per poter abbattere del 20% le emissioni di gas serra; questi obiettivi saranno raggiungibili solo grazie ad un rilevante impegno in ricerca e sviluppo tecnologico. Questo è ancor più vero per l'Italia che, dovendo privilegiare la sostenibilità socio-economica e ambientale delle colture da biomassa, avrà la necessità di organizzare la produzione e l'uso dei materiali d'origine vegetale per usi industriali, in stretto collegamento fra esigenze degli utilizzatori e le capacità dei produttori, in filiere agro-industriali corte con solida base territoriale e alti apporti tecnologici, di ricerca e innovazione.
