The project addresses the effects of natural and anthropogenic drivers and pressures (desertification, agriculture, pollution) interacting in space and time, on management of Mediterranean protected areas. Processes will be investigated at different scales, developing analytical tools for monitoring, modelling and management, through identification of factors governing habitat changes in time and space, focussing on fragmentation effects on biodiversity. Field studies and modelling will range from natural areas to nearby agroecosystems, identifying scale-dependent effects of society-related habitat degradation and fragmentation, on plant and animal population viability and persistence of ecosystems functionality, considering space/time domains.With different approaches (population dynamics, metagenomics, microcosm analysis up to ecosystem modelling and remote sensing), we aim at a better understanding on the forcing of antropogenic drivers and pressures on the ecology of selected ecosystem and biodiversity components (soil biota, plants, invertebrates, lesser kestrel), to foster their sustainable conservation. Models will assess fragmentation effects on population genetic viability, from microscale up to a multi-regional level integrating molecular biology and metagenomic data with Earth Observation (EO) analyses. Indicators and procedures, including risk analysis and entropy or predictive models supporting management and policy options will be developed. Expected results are inventories, models and thresholds for management and policy options, instruments for environment analysis or biodiversity and ecosystems conservation. Further results include increased knowledge/capacity of supporting scale-related instruments for analysis, sustainable use of natural biodiversity, inside and outside protected and Nature 2000 sites, critical distances and thresholds for functional habitats connectivity, data on dispersal of endangered plants and wildlife.
