The need of developing a domain-decomposition algorithm is discussed in the naval hydrodynamic context. The study is focused on methods for the simulation of free-surface flows around bodies with arbitrary shapes. Meaning and usefulness of such kind of approach are detailed analyzed both from physical and numerical points of view. Main applicable strategies are outlined. Advantages and challenges are described.
