VoIP (Voice over IP) is a set of software technologies that enable you to establish and maintain a voice communication over the Internet. The interest for this technology is increasing because of the important benefits that its use permits compared to traditional telephony, in particular it reduces operating costs, investments in infrastructure and it increase productivity bringing new features. The CNR Research Area of Pisa is using a VoIP solution based entirely on open source software that allows to extend the legacy telephone system in all those contexts where the traditional service is deficient, such as mobility (VoIP clients installed on smartphone connected to the wifi network of the CNR campus) or lack of resources (non-existent telephone wiring). The VoIP system has been integrated with the traditional one in order to offer the maximum flexibility to users, so they can keep the same habits. This makes possible to migrate end users associated to legacy equipments to VoIP terminals or simultaneous use of the same phone number on multiple devices (e.g. legacy phone in office, mobile VoIP client on the smartphone, VoIP hard/soft-phone at home).
