The penetrometers is the most widely used instrument for assessing soil strength in situ. There are many disadvantages of cone resistance measurement. The reason of disadvantages lies in the empirical nature of the data obtained. But in the past there were offen established empirical correlations between cone resistance and crop root growth, vehicle traffic on the field and tillage implements. Three different penetrometers are used in the practice to measure cone index, two were static and the other is dynamic. The static penetrometer cone is pushed into the soil by operator. Thus digital output and data storage make ability to carry out simple statistical calculations. Intensity of soil compaction is shown as a cone index, which is force per unit area and it is usualy reported in daN/cm2, MPa or kPa. The dynamic penetrometer cone is pushed into the soil by successive hammer blows. Abstract

In order to keep accuracy, that could be used simply and rapidly by one person in the field. Output of data in analogue form presents problems in statistical analysis. Resistance can be calculated as the work done divided by the distance the penetrometer travel or as the average cone index for each depth of soil traveled by each blow of the hammer reported in MPa.
