This report describes the knowledge architecture of the KYOTO project that distinguishes three layers of knowledge: vocabularies, wordnets and a central ontology. The layers are distinguished according to the principle of the division of linguistic labor. Such a division is required to handle and structure large volumes of domain and general vocabularies and its linguistic diversity. We also define the relations between the layers and the reasoning and inferencing techniques that can be applied to each one. Finally, we also explain how they alltogether can be used for reasoning and inferencing in the KYOTO system.

Abstract

This report describes the knowledge architecture of the KYOTO project that distinguishes three layers of knowledge: vocabularies, wordnets and a central ontology. The layers are distinguished according to the principle of the division of linguistic labor. Such a division is required to handle and structure large volumes of domain and general vocabularies and its linguistic diversity. We also define the relations between the layers and the reasoning and inferencing techniques that can be applied to each one. Finally, we also explain how they alltogether can be used for reasoning and inferencing in the KYOTO system.
