This technical report discusses how the master-master takeover protocol, originally created for MODBUS RTU, has been redesigned for MODBUS CAN. Chapter 1 briefly recalls how the takeover protocol works and highlights the main differences between the old and new designs. In the same chapter, the relationship between the takeover protocol and the MODBUS CAN transport protocol are also clarified. Chapter 2 presents the protocol design, while full details of its implementation are given in Chapter 3. Chapter 4 lists the known implementation limits and how they have been addressed.

Abstract

This technical report discusses how the master-master takeover protocol, originally created for MODBUS RTU, has been redesigned for MODBUS CAN. Chapter 1 briefly recalls how the takeover protocol works and highlights the main differences between the old and new designs. In the same chapter, the relationship between the takeover protocol and the MODBUS CAN transport protocol are also clarified. Chapter 2 presents the protocol design, while full details of its implementation are given in Chapter 3. Chapter 4 lists the known implementation limits and how they have been addressed.
