ITALES is a 3 year R&D project funded by the European Commission's Information Society Technologies Programme. It specifically addresses a major European priority: the School of Tomorrow. As well as creating innovative authoring tools that let teachers produce personalised learning content for their pupils, the project is also developing a web-based 3D virtual reality learning and teaching environment. Teachers and pupils will be able to use the system not just as a vehicle for learning, but also to communicate and interact with one another using several new communication tools. The web-based user interface will use virtual reality technologies to present a metaphoric school building with rooms and other areas one would expect find in a real school. The overall objective of ITALES is to develop a European-wide virtual teaching and learning community whose key aims are the promotion of pedagogic content sharing and re-use, sharing of opinions and innovative approaches, and the provision of pedagogical and pastoral support for learners. The developmental objectives of ITALES are to: 1)develop a set of authoring tools that enable teachers to prepare digital content for personalised learning; 2)develop new content management tools that can be used by teachers to plan and build their own online courses; 3)develop a library of databases to allow content sharing and re-use; 4)develop a web-based 3D virtual system for learning and teaching that can be configured in terms of both appearance and the tools and content available to learners.
Il progetto ITALES (IST- 2000- 26356) è stato cofinanziato dalla comunità Europea nell'ambito del V Programma Quadro, attraverso la linea di azione "La scuola del futuro". L'obiettivo principale di ITALES è la creazione di una comunità europea virtuale di insegnamento e apprendimento, il cui scopo è la promozione e la condivisione di contenuti pedagogici fra studenti e insegnanti attraverso diversi strumenti di comunicazione. Nel progetto sono stati sviluppati diversi strumenti software: 1)Strumenti autore innovativi fruibili attraverso la rete, per permettere agli insegnanti di costruire contenuti e attività pedagogiche; 2)Strumenti per la gestione dei contenuti che possono essere usati dagli insegnanti per pianificare e costruire i loro corsi online; 3)Basi di dati che consentano la condivisione e il riuso di contenuti; 4)Un'interfaccia 3-D per accedere e gestire il sistema nel suo complesso. Nell'ambito del progetto ITALES, ITD ha sviluppato due sistemi aperti multi-ambiente: il sistema ARI-LAB-2 e il sistema ARI@ITALES orientati rispettivamente allo sviluppo di capacità di soluzione di problemi aritmetici in allievi della scuola dell'obbligo e alla realizzazione da parte degli insegnanti di corsi on-line sulle stesse tematiche.
