We organized a series of International Congresses on "Science and Technology of Cultural Heritage in the Mediterranean Basin" in countries facing the Mediterranean Sea. The major objective of these Congresses has been to adjourn the "state of the art" of science and technology for the safeguard of Cultural Heritage, particularly in countries facing the Mediterranean Basin and encouraging exchanges of scientific and technological experiences among scientists, with the fundamental purpose of helping Public Administrations to preserve and exploit their Cultural Patrimony. Another major problem debated has been the cultural restoration and revitalization of historical centres in these countries. This Special Issue of the Journal is completely devoted to the 5th International Congress held in Istanbul in 2011. About 600 scientists and delegates coming from all over Europe, Middle East and Africa participated to the Istanbul Congress. About 460 presentations were discussed according to the following Sessions: Session A: Resources of the Territory Session B: Diagnostics and Restoration Session C: Biological Diversity and Performing Arts Session D: Museum, Projects and Benefits An opportunity was given to participants, i.e. to submit their full papers to a Special Issue of the Journal. Fifty full papers were refereed and accepted for publication as an electronic and/or paper version. During the Istanbul Congress a project on Cultural Heritage called EACH (European Agency for Cultural Heritage) was approved and submitted to the European Commissioner for Research and Innovation Mrs. Maire Geoghegan-Quinn. The Commissioner found the document significant for the preparation of the next 8th Framework Programme called "Horizon 2020" to be started in 2014. We deeply thank the Publisher Elsevier and the Editor in Chief for the opportunity given to us for this Special Issue of the Journal and the Associated Editors for their help preparing the Issue. Abstract
