The present project is derived from the collaboration between the Institute of Acoustics and Sensors CNR of Rome and the Institute Jean Le Rond d'Alembert , CUMR 7190, CNRS, UPMC (d'Alembert). The proposal deals with the study, the modeling and the optimization of aerial parametric array for NDT applications. The parties intend to work on a mathematical model for the representation of the nonlinear propagation of sound waves in air, validating the model by means of experimental tests, and on an accurate definition of proper measuring configurations for non-destructive investigation of materials and structures. From already obtained results, an insight into both the actual technological and applicative potential is foreseen. New sets of experimental trials are programmed both for the source previously tested and for new commercial sources. These tests, carried out on materials (i.e. sound absorbers) and structures (i.e. heritage objects, laboratory models presenting heterogeneous acoustic response, road pavements), will experimentally verify the improvement of the functionality of integrated measuring systems, equipped with such directional source. The expected results shall be analysed in terms of higher spatial resolution, SNR, lower test duration and more performing and innovative configuration and portability. Finally, the insight into the modelling development will allow the design of a parametric array specifically dedicated to NDT on heritage objects. This also requires an extensive review of the technical aspects of the transducer's manufacturing process already used, and of the materials used for its active element. A prototype will be developed during the last year, whose feasibility will be analyzed trying to support this goal by means of other funds.
