USASelected Papers from the 2nd NANOSMAT-USA 2014 - the International Conference on Surfaces, Coatings and Nanostructured Materials (NANOSMAT-USA) - Rice University, Houston, 19-22 May 2014.
The International Conference on Surfaces, Coatings and Nano-structured Materials" (NANOSMAT) has rapidly emerged as the premier conference in the field of materials science, engineering, technology and all aspects of "nano". Since 2005, it has been very successruilv organised in several European countries, including Portugal, Spain, Italy, France, Poland, Czech Republic and also in USA (Tampa& Houston) and in Asia (China and Turkey). The 2ndNANOSMAT USA conference was held at the Smalley Institute of Nanoscale Science and Technology, Rice University in Houston, USA, during 19-22 May 2014. The conference attracted 300 abstracts and some 200 delegates belonging to approx. 40 Countries of the world. The conference fostered the gathering of extremely talented and truly international people to Exchange novel ideas, share new knowledge and technical know-how in the broad fields of nanoscience and technology. The oral talks were conducted in several parallel sessions. SYMPOSIA, included Nanomaterials, Surface, Science, Engineering and Technology, Energy, Nano-Medicine and Nano-Biotechnology, carbon based Nanostrucrures. Nobel laureate professor H.W. Kroto from Florida State University, USA delivered the plenary lecture. We had received many manuscripts for this specila issue of Applied Surface Science. The papers were all peer reviewed and the reviewing processes was under responsibility of the following team of Guest editors: ProfessorJeff Th.M. De Hosson (chair), Dr. Nasar Ali, Dr. Giuseppe Fierro, Dr. Mahmood Aliofkhazraei, Dr. Mircea Chipara. We would like to thank all our sponsors, especially the Richard Smalley Institute for Nanoscale Science and Technologv, Rice univeisity for their support in making NANOSMAT-USA a great success and in particular Elsevier making this special issue possible for the international nanoscience and nanotechnology community.
