After 1 month and half of landfarming of fresh dredged sediment, supposed to be sufficient to reach the adequate characteristics for their reuse in road construction, the water and organic matter content in sediment were still too high (organic matter more than 2% in several points of the basin). For this reason, a longer landfarming period has been decided to be carried out (two-three months more). Instead, two months landfarming process were particularly effective in improving biological activity and further decreasing organic contamination in the Agriport sediments. However, due to the lower nutrient content and water holding capacity, a mix of sediments with an organic matrix (such as vegetal residues, compost, soil) should be recommended to make them suitable for their reuse in nursery activity.
