Executive summary The two year European Network for Noise and Health (ENNAH) project was launched in September 2009, with the aims of establishing a network of experts on noise and health in Europe and informing future research directions and policy needs in Europe. The ENNAH network brings together 33 European research centers to facilitate high level science communication on environmental noise and related health effects. Seven work packages have been formulated within the Network, each led by a European expert in the professional area of the work package. The work packages organize workshops to facilitate the interdisciplinary knowledge exchange and discussion among the Network partners. The key component of the project is a literature review completed by Work Package 2 (WP2). The purpose of Work Package 2 (WP2)within the ENNAH project is to (i) provide a state of art summary of knowledge on noise exposure and non-auditory health effects, (ii) to identify gaps in the evidence and (iii) to make recommendations for further research. This report presents an overview of the work package activity and, in particular, the two workshops, the literature search method and the dissemination procedure. The structure of the report is as follows: a brief description of the current situation in noise research, the WP2 work package structure and aims, a description of the literature search methods used for key areas of noise research identified, an overview of the workshops, summary of present findings and future work within the work package. It is intended as a reference document for project partners working with other work package and other interested parties. While information about previous studies on noise and health has been collated and presented for Network partners (see Table 1), WP2 mainly focuses on specific topics such as noise and co-exposures and noise sensitivity and new health outcomes that have not been assessed in previous reviews. The responsibilities of the literature review tasks and further review paper preparation have been shared between the work package partners, helping to establish communication between researchers. The work of WP2 on identifying gaps in current knowledge is intended to help other ENNAH work packages ? informing the assessment of noise exposure (work package 3), moderating factors (work package 4) and health outcomes (work package 5), which will lead to proposals for new research, which will be determined in work package 6. The dissemination plan for WP2 focuses on making the key findings of the literature search easily accessible for the project partners to promote a better understanding of environmental ENNAH Project no. 226442 WP2 WORKSHOP REPORT 18-12-2010 Page 3 of 50 noise and possible health impacts and to aid communication between scientists, politics and the public.
