The objectives of the poject are: study and implementation of vision/laser-based innovative techniques for the recognition of defects on black tyres; development of a computer-based inspection station for the automatic inspection of the tyres rejecting the defective ones. The project is oriented to a real application related to the industry of tyres manufacturing. In particular, the project will provide on-line monitoring of the quality of tyres, developing a prototypal inspection station that will be tested in the production process of the Bridgestone Spa, in Bari, with which the Tekna Srl has established an agreement for the necessary support to the management of this R & D project. Tyres can have different types of defects in both their outer and inner surfaces caused during the manufacturing process: bubbles, bladders, cracks, cuts, etc. Currently tyres inspection is carried out by human experts. Each expert inspects 24 tyres per hour on average. The final aim of the project is to remove the human intervention developing an automatic prototype able to recognize and classify the different defects of tyres.
