Abstract

This line of research deals with the roman CNR-ICVBC long-time experience in creating original protocols for monitoring the human risk in historic centres and UNESCO sites, in order to preserve and enhance them in a sustainable way. In fact, are apparently evident risks historic cores are subjected to because of the negative impact of mass tourism on the conservation of urban heritage and the impoverishment of central places from their traditional civic values. Furthermore even enhancement or re-qualification policies in historic centres may have direct consequences on their conservation because often increase indiscriminately their fruition. This implies a greater risk of decay due to the bigger numbers of visitors and their interaction with the artefacts and the environment in which these are located. In this sense the human impact or so called "human risk" is one of the aspects less studied in relation to the sustainable fruition of historic centres. The lecture shows the CNR-ICVBC experience in Roman case study in creating recommendations for urban re-qualification, enhancement and sustainable fruition, and in finding ways to reconcile the needs of the tourist industry with those of life in historic centres and the conservation of their monumental cores.
