This is the first part of the report on the joint experimental campaign carried out in collaboration by Consorzio RFX, Padova (Italy) and JAEA, Naka (Japan) for the development and testing of new magnetic configurations for accelerators of negative ion based neutral beam injectors. Th is f irst part reports weeks 1 - 3 of the campaign, describing the experiment preparation and the experimental campaign without Cesium seeding. Th e se cond part covers the Cs operations in week 4 - 6 and it is presented in RFX - MITICA - TN - 352 . The third part concerning data interpretation and proposal of further studies is presented in RFX - MITICA - TN - 349.
