Currently operative European social platforms (social cohesion, family, sustainable lifestyle, social services) are social platforms in the strict sense, for they meet societal needs and produce social innovation. The H2020 WP2014-2015 Reflective 9 call asks for a new kind of social platform that should go beyond social innovation and aims directly at cultural innovation. We think a substantial societal need can be met by reflecting on the notion of inclusive citizenship. Therefore we are launching SPICE, the "Social Platform on Reflective Societies towards Inclusive Citizenship in Europe." Cultural heritage makes a central contribution to European identity that encompasses both an appreciation of diversity as well as shared experiences, values and aspirations. With migration among the key issues at the top of public and academic agendas worldwide a reconsideration is urgent of the migrant practices of transfer of organizing principles and conditions for developing competences to act in multicultural settings--very much like adding foreign spices to a home-made meal, which explains the metaphor in the acronym. In a globalized world we need to make mutual enrichment possible while countering xenophobic attitudes. SPICE aims at exploring contemporary social differences and tensions by contextualizing them historically within their cultural contexts. SPICE shall look into the following networking lines: (A) Shared Cultures throughout European History; (B) Unity in Diversity; (C) European Intellectual History as a Quest for Freedom; (D) Inclusive Immigration (Chances and Challenges); (E) Cultural Processes of Social Inclusion. SPICE involves a substantial number of participants, among whom researchers, interested stakeholders from industry, universities, research funding and performing organizations, civil society, non-governmental organizations, political institutions as well as European foundations, which will participate in the platform.

SPICE-Social Platform for Reflective Societies towards Inclusive Citizenship in Europe

2014
