Experiments have been carried out at CNR-INSEAN of a Container Vessel model equipped alternatively without and with a Pre-Swirl Stator device (PSS). The tested PSS is a 5-bladed stator, mounted on the stern boss just upstream of the propeller for generating swirling flow to the propeller. The model tests predict a propeller rate of revolution reduction by the PSS of about 1%, with a power gain around 3.5%, while alternating results are obtained by thrust that reduces up to 0.5% in the speed range 18 to 20 knots. An assessment of the accuracy of the measurement is provided for both configurations. The combined standard uncertainties uc result equal to 0.7/0.9% of the measurement for the torque, for the w/o and with configuration respectively, 0.1% for rate of revolutions 0.7% for thrust.
