Abstract

The facies analysis of the outcropping carbonate sequences of the Ionian Islands allowed to trace the Cretaceous evolutive phases of the Pre-Apulian zone. The resulting pre-collisional tectono-sedimentary pattern of this zone, placed between the Apulian platform and the Ionian trough, is characterized by sedimentary units with different evolutive sequences. The map shows the distribution of the main sedimentary facies belonging to different tectono-sedimentary units. A persistent isolated platform unit includes the Zakynthos-Western Kephalonia sector, while a short-lived regional platform characterises Lefkas-Central Kephalonia and Eastern Kephalonia sectors. These units developed different geometries during the time and have been affected, at various evolutive stages, by two main phenomena: drowning and subaerial exposure.
