In the last few years, temporary contracts have become an important research and policy topic. This issue is particularly relevant to the study of transition from school to the labour market. The theoretical perspectives that are opposed in previous studies are the stepping stone and the scarring effect arguments. The first perspective argues that temporary contracts provide a bridge to permanent jobs, while the second defines this type of contract as a trap in precarious and insecure jobs. The Thesis investigates the topic using two regional data warehouse: the Vocational Training and Job Information System (MonVISO) and the Selections Workers' Catalog (COB). The target population has been chosen because of the peculiar disadvantage: young people (aged between sixteen and twenty-one years old) qualified in the vocational training paths (between 2010-2012) funded through the OP-ESF during the 2007-2013 European program. I estimate a multinomial Probit models and I show that in the Italian labour market it is not always desirable to transit with temporary contract. In fact, the probability to be employed five years from the qualification is lower for individuals entering the labour market, one year after the course, through atypical contract (-5%) or worse in unemployment condition (-16%) compared to individuals whose transition takes place through permanent contracts. Finally, a further result concerns the probability to be employed with permanent contracts five years after the vocational training course. Even in this case, the scarring effect of unemployment events and atypical contracts is confirmed, with a lower probability respectively of 18 and 8 percentage points of being employed with permanent contracts five years after the course.
