Towing experiments have been carried out at CNR-INM for the Yamaha Sportsman 247 planing boat. The model was tested in calm water, first in the bare hull configuration then equipped with a dummy version of the lowercase (briefly POD). The lowercase trim angle was set alternatively at 0, 4 and 8 degrees. In addition to the standard resistance measurement, two multi-component balances were used to measure the forces acting on the POD. The model experiences a strong porpoising beginning from the speed of 6 m/s (19 knots full scale). The onset of the porpoising was manually prevented to acquire reliable measures. The results illustrate that the weight of the Drag of the POD increases with speed and accounts for 5% to 15% at the highest speeds tested.
