Abstract

This technical note describes the studies for the development of an algorithm for the detection of intrusion events of the Northern Mediterranean Current into the Gulf of Lion using satellite altimetry. The algorithm has been developed by combining altimetric observations with highresolution modelling and has been validated with in-situ observations from JULIO Current Meter. The relation of the geostrophic currents and horizontal winds with the existence of intrusion events has been analyzed in depth with the analysis of a 10-years dataset of simulations from the highresolution circulation model SYMPHONIE.
