El 23 de junio del 2020, a las 15:29 UTC (10:29 am hora local), se registró un sismo con epicentro 23 Km al sur de Crucecita, Oaxaca, México, M 7.4, efecto de la interacción entre la placa de Cocos y la placa Norteamericana. De acuerdo a los datos del Servicio Sismológico Nacional (SSN), las coordenadas del epicentro son 15.784° latitud N y 96.120° longitud W, a una profundidad de 22.6 km .El mecanismo focal del evento (rumbo = 266.8°, echado = 17.2°, deslizamiento = 60.5°) corresponde a una falla inversa, que alcanzó un deslizamiento máximo de 3.19 m (SSN), debido a la interacción entre la placa de Cocos, que subduce bajo la placa Norteamérica a una velocidad de 60 mm / año en esta zona (USGS).
