Beginning with the principle of battery functioning, this report describe the ongoing development of batteries and its potentialities in terms of exchanging energy with a smart grid. It also reflects on the possibility to re-use batteries after the first life. A business case needs to be developed for such a case and the basic question becomes what the total cost of second life batteries will become compared with the decreasing cost evolution of first life batteries.
