The project investigates the knowledge processes associated to smart working. Despite its increasing adoption we know very little about how smart working influences collaboration between smart workers and 'traditional' (i.e., office-based) workers. In organizations combining traditional and smart working in 'hybrid workplaces' we investigate how work design, cultural values, and technology use affect abilities of knowledge integration and knowledge generation at the individual, team and organization level. We will develop a multilevel model based on the interaction of these factors across levels of analysis. Last, we will investigate the social and organizational impact of hybrid workplaces. The multilevel, mixed methods study will include multiple case studies and a survey in Italian large and SME organizations adopting hybrid workplaces to perform knowledge-based activities (e.g., new product development, consulting). The project will contribute to literatures on new organizational forms, knowledge management, job and organizational design. Complementary, it will support managers in designing effective smart work practices, managing diversity in hybrid workplaces, improving workers' well-being and assessing organizational and societal impacts of smart working.

Smart working in hybrid workspaces: A multi-level study of knowledge-intensive activities and their organizational and social impact

2018
