The understanding of the combustion process is an important feature in order to improve the engine performances, especially in terms of pollutant emissions. Temporal and spatial information on the air-fuel mixing, the evolution of the combustion, and the pollutants formation have been investigated using a transparent engine. In particular, analysing the luminous emission of the combustion it has been possible to determine the evolution of visible flames which is linked to the soot evolution. Thus it has been possible to follow both the soot formation and oxidation process. Beside, the study of the flames, in the infrared wavelength range, has permitted to follow the evolution of the combustion products. Different engine operating conditions were investigated.
