Abstract

The aim of this document is to describe the web platform designed and implemented in the past two years (2020-2021): the 'ESPAD Trend Database Explore and Visualize' web portal. The platform is available at URL: www.espad.eu ESPAD - the European School Survey Project on Alcohol and Other Drugs - is an independent research project conducted by research teams in more than 40 European countries. ESPAD has the overall aim to collect comparable data on substance use and other forms of risk behaviour among 15- to 16-year-old students in order to monitor trends within countries. Between 1995 and 2019, seven waves of data collection were conducted across 49 European countries. Some other information can be found in Section 2 The idea behind the web system, whose funtionalities are presented in this report, is to make the most of the data and knowledge of the European data collection, from 1995 to the latest edition in 2019. The database underlying the platform contains data from all participanting countries in all ESPAD waves: the 'ESPAD Trend DB 1995-2019,' described in Section 3 . The platform is supported by the ESPAD Trend DB Ontology defined with domain expert - ESPAD Coordinators - before the design and implementation phase of the platform. The Ontology is presented in Section 4. A detailed description of the main functionalities of the platform and use cases are reported in Section 5. The adopted technologies for the system development, and technical notes are reported in Section 6.
