STEMS is a soil moisture network located in the the Piedmont region, in the north-west of Italy, and hosted by the Institute for Agricultural and Earthmoving Machines (IMAMOTER) of the Italian National Research Council (CNR). It is installed in three vineyard plots, with different inter-rows soil management. The plots are also monitored for runoff and soil erosion. The network consists of 4 stations measuring soil moisture and soil temperature and associated data for precipitation and air temperature. Observations are currently available from April 20152011 until September 2022. Since 2022, it is included in the Internationa Soil Moisture Network. The International Soil Moisture Network is an international cooperation to establish and maintain a global in-situ soil moisture database. This database is an essential means for validating and improving global satellite products, and land surface, climate, and hydrological models. The International Soil Moisture Network is a combined effort of the Global Energy and Water Exchanges Project (GEWEX), the Committee on Earth Observation Satellites (CEOS), the Global Climate Observing System - Terrestrial Observation Panel for Climate (GCOS-TOPC), the Group of Earth Observation (GEO), and the Global Terrestrial Network on Hydrology (GTN-H). The International Soil Moisture Network has been made possible through financial support of the Earth Observation Programme of the European Space Agency (ESA) and the many voluntary contributions of scientists and networks from around the world.
