The present collection includes a set of acoustic recordings of common bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) acquired in 2021 during the interaction of multiple animals with fishing gears in the north-central of the Adriatic Sea. The collection contains: - the raw signal wavefile with dolphin's acoustic emissions (DATA1) - the results of dolphin's vocalization detection and classification (DATA2); - 303 single wavefiles including each single detected whistle extracted from the raw signal wavefile (DATA3); - 303 spctrogram images of each wavefile descripted above (DATA4). This complete collection could be very useful to deepen the analysis of dolphin's social life, communication, and interaction with fishing activities.

Abstract

Derived from DOI: 10.6084/m9.figshare.21613938, this dataset contains the results of the detection and classification of dolphins' vocalizations in the central-northern Adriatic Sea, based on both passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) analysis and a specifically developed algorithm.

In details:

whistles.txt includes useful information on 303 whistles visually detected from the whole recording, where:

the first column reports the starting time offset

the second column reports the end-time offset

the third column contains the classification (W for single whistle, MW for multiple whistles) and the relative quality grade of the whistle. The whistle quality increases with increasing grade (from 1 to 3).

clicks.txt contains a list of the classified echolocalization emission events detected by an algorithm specific developed for this aim, where:

the first column reports the starting time offset

the second column reports the end-time offset

the third column contains the classification (CT for click train, BPS for Burst Pulse Sound)

These two txt files can be directly imported into Audacity software to mark the vocalization in the raw wave file stored in DATA 1.

results.csv reports the results of an algorithm-based analysis of 99 acoustic segments, achieved splitting the raw audio signal in one-minute-length parts. This analysis was performed in order to detect and classify high-frequency dolphin's emissions. The csv file includes the following information for one-minute acoustic segment:

the segment number;

the number of detected peaks classified as Click Train (CT);

the duration of the CT;

the number of detected peaks classified as Burst Pulse Sound (BPS);

the duration of the BPS;

the number of whistles, if present in the segment;
