This technical report investigates a possible series expansion of the Riemann sum (that for the best of my knowledge is an original contribution) when the integration interval is divided into subintervals of constant width. After reviewing the derivation of the trapezoidal rule from the Newton-Cotes formulas and the integral Euler-Maclaurin formula, the corresponding remainder terms are compared. This comparison leads to a relation expressing a particular Riemann sum in terms of the difference between the function values at the endpoints and a series of correction terms involving even-order derivatives evaluated at the endpoints and successive powers of the integration step. As the step size tends to zero, the resulting expression reduces to the fundamental theorem of calculus. The proposed relation is also examined numerically for the exponential and a power function using optimization procedures implemented in Excel. The numerical results are consistent with the theoretical expansion and provide supporting evidence for the proposed derivation
