Vulci: l'area urbana e il suburbio. Evoluzione storica della città e del territorio

Vulci, located on the border between Lazio and Tuscany, is one of the most important cities of the Etruscan dodecapolis. Situated on a plateau along the Fiora River, about 11 kilometres from the coast, its name is associated with the famous paintings of the François Tomb and the rich necropolises, excavated since the 19th century, which still attract the attention of researchers. This volume reconstructs the settlement evolution and the town-planning development of the city and the suburban area, from Prehistory to Late Antiquity, by means of the diachronic analysis of published data and of discoveries made in surveys, and also of the study of historical aerial photographs. For the purpose of the research the author elaborated a detailed cartography with very narrow contour lines (isohypses) to highlight the micro-relief, a georeferenced basis for GIS data management. In addition to the new cartography and the discovery of previously unknown settlement areas, the most significant results include, among others, in the urban area the evidence of a theatre, a temple in opus quadratum with an adjacent public area, and the urban street plan; in the suburbs, a new sanctuary, the articulated road network and the details of numerous tombs accurately recorded on the map.

Vulci, posta al confine tra Lazio e Toscana, è tra le più importanti città della dodecapoli etrusca. Sorta su un pianoro lungo il fiume Fiora a circa 11 chilometri dalla costa, il suo nome è legato soprattutto alle famose pitture della Tomba François e alle ricchissime necropoli, scavate fin dal XIX secolo, che ancora oggi costituiscono fonte di attrazione per gli studiosi. Il presente volume ricostruisce le dinamiche evolutive del popolamento e lo sviluppo urbanistico della città e dell’area suburbana, dalla Preistoria al Tardo Antico, attraverso l’analisi diacronica dei dati editi e d’archivio, delle scoperte effettuate nelle ricognizioni di superficie e con lo studio analitico delle fotografie aeree storiche. Per la ricerca l’autore ha redatto una dettagliata cartografia, con curve di livello molto ravvicinate per evidenziare il microrilievo, base georeferenziata per la gestione dei dati in ambiente GIS. Oltre alla nuova cartografia e alla scoperta di aree insediative prima sconosciute, tra i risultati di maggior rilievo merita ricordare l’individuazione nell’area urbana delle tracce di un probabile teatro, di un tempio in opera quadrata con annessa area a funzione pubblica e dell’assetto stradale urbano. Nel suburbio, la ricerca ha portato alla scoperta di un nuovo tempio e alla definizione dell’articolata viabilità di collegamento col territorio, con il dettaglio di numerose tombe riportate con precisione nella carta.
