In modern Italian dictionaries, the definition of magnetic and magnetism is generally approached from two points of view: the technical-scientific connotation and the figurative one. Often the meanings of the two connotations are similar in sense, but their use in spoken and written language may be very different. In this brief paper I would like to show the results of a research I’ve conducted on the magnetism concept within modern and ancient dictionaries. I’ve produced a cloud graphic representation of the frequencies of these terms in the two connotations: technical-scientific and figurative.

Abstract
In modern Italian dictionaries, the definition of magnetic and magnetism is generally approached from two points of view: the technical-scientific connotation and the figurative one. Often the meanings of the two connotations are similar in sense, but their use in spoken and written language may be very different. In this brief paper I would like to show the results of a research I’ve conducted on the magnetism concept within modern and ancient dictionaries. I’ve produced a cloud graphic representation of the frequencies of these terms in the two connotations: technical-scientific and figurative.File in questo prodotto:
