The invention concerns a process for the preparation of an organophilic smectite functionalized with choline and the smectite obtainable from the same process. The smectite of the invention is capable of sequestering a wide spectrum of structurally different mycotoxins and may therefore be used as an additive and/or supplement to food and feed to reduce exposure to mycotoxins and prevent their toxicity (mycotoxicosis)
