The book deals with one of the most serious kinds of damage to written heritage: ink corrosion, which is the decay of iron gall inks and their carries, whether paper or parchment. As these links were used for centuries all over Europe and beyond, the potential loss that can be caused by this decaying process is devastating. The book brings together both conservators and scientists perspective on the results of the latest research into the problem and seeks to provide clearer view as to what still needs to be done to increase our capability of rescuing our ink-written heritage, as well as a starting point for new research projects.

Abstract

The book deals with one of the most serious kinds of damage to written heritage: ink corrosion, which is the decay of iron gall inks and their carries, whether paper or parchment. As these links were used for centuries all over Europe and beyond, the potential loss that can be caused by this decaying process is devastating. The book brings together both conservators and scientists perspective on the results of the latest research into the problem and seeks to provide clearer view as to what still needs to be done to increase our capability of rescuing our ink-written heritage, as well as a starting point for new research projects.
