The Data and Ethics Management Plan (DEMP) is a strategic document commonly developed within European research and innovation projects to define how project data and results will be managed, protected, shared, and ultimately exploited. It goes beyond the technical aspects of data handling by outlining the broader framework through which the knowledge, technologies, and outcomes generated by the project will create scientific, societal, economic, or policy impact. The DEMP describes the types of data that will be collected or produced, the procedures for their storage, preservation, and sharing, and the measures adopted to ensure compliance with the FAIR principles, making data Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable. At the same time, it addresses issues related to intellectual property rights, ownership of results, and the strategies that partners will implement to maximize the uptake and long-term value of project outcomes. As such, the DEMP is an important project management and governance tool, ensuring that data and results remain accessible, useful, and impactful well beyond the project's lifetime, while supporting both open science objectives and the sustainable exploitation of research and innovation outputs.
