The volume "Atlante dei Vitigni Rari di Puglia" presents the comprehensive outcomes of the research, field exploration, and characterization activities carried out within project “Recovery of Apulian Grapevine Germplasm” (Re.Ge.Vi.P.), funded by the Apulia Region (RDP 2014-2022, Operation 10.2.1) to counteract severe genetic erosion caused by post-phylloxera varietal simplification. The study implements an integrated interdisciplinary methodology combining historical and archival bibliographic research (starting from a target "Mancolista" inventory of over 200 historical local cultivars) with field prospections and Citizen Science across regional "refuge areas". Field surveys enabled the georeferencing and sampling of 820 traditional grapevine accessions; subsequent molecular profiling using nuclear SSR microsatellite markers uncovered 228 unique unknown genotypes and successfully relocated 48 historical varieties listed in 19th-century literature. The monograph provides an in-depth characterization of 30 rare native grape varieties, featuring historical records, OIV ampelographic descriptions, agronomic and technological traits, berry and wine chemical analyses, and sensory profiles, alongside a synoptic table of 9-locus OIV SSR genetic profiles. Additionally, the book includes two focus studies on the discovery of Antonio Jatta’s unpublished 1887 ampelographic manuscript and on the "Francesine" (Direct Producer Hybrids), together with a tribute to Prof. Vito Nicola Savino. This body of knowledge provides the scientific and legal foundation for ex-situ conservation at the Locorotondo germplasm regional repository, registration in the National Register of Grapevine Varieties (RNVV), and the sustainable reintroduction of these genetic resources into Apulian PDO/PGI wine production frameworks.
