Progress in the scientific-technological sectors of geothermal research is immense, especially in the last 10 y. We now construct detailed, accurate models of geothermal systems; developments in exploration methods and data interpretation have reduced the time and funds needed to investigate geothermal prospects; we are on the brink of creating artificial geothermal systems; we have improved the efficiency of power and direct-use plants, and found new solutions to old problems; we use heat pumps, exploiting the heat content of low-temperature resources, on a far greater scale and at a far faster rate than we could ever have imagined possible. The World Summits on Sustainable Development laid great emphasis on greenhouse gas emissions, strongly recommending reductions in fossil fuel consumption, and a better use of renewable energy, including geothermal energy. It is within this context that UNESCO published this book, as part of its Renewable Energy Science and Engineering Series.
