The adopted approach to study the extracellular organic matter (EOM ) is based on its natural accumulation in stationary-growing laboratory cultures. The fluorescence analysis combined with the biological method showed effective tracing the accumulation trend of humic-like fluorescing compounds and providing a distinctive characterization of EOM from a number of marine diatoms.
